Anthony martial has been ruled out of man United vs Southampton clash

Manchester United has been hit by injury to their only recognized number 9, Anthony Martial, ahead of their Premier League clash with Southampton this weekend.

The France forward is not expected to be available for the club’s meeting with Southampton as a result of the injury he picked up versus Crystal Palace last weekend.

Coming off the back of a frustrating 1 – 1 draw against Wolves in their 2nd Premier League match of the new campaign, the Red Devils welcomed Roy Hodgson’s men to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon but succumbed to a 2 – 1 defeat leaving them with one win in three, the win coming in the 4 – 0 drubbing of Chelsea.

United headed into proceedings hoping for an immediate bounce-back performance but things only went from bad to worse for the Manchester giants versus Palace.

A dismal display on the part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men looked as though it was set to result in the shares being spoiled, after Daniel James cancelled out Jordan Ayew’s first-half strike.

Incredibly, however, Palace went on to bag a late winner against the run of play, as Patrick van Aanholt slammed home at David De Gea’s near post.

An altogether miserable afternoon’s work for United, meanwhile, was compounded by a pair of blows on the injury front.

First off, Luke Shaw was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring problem on the stroke of half-time.

And this was followed by Anthony Martial also pulling up with an issue, shortly before the full-time whistle.

Speaking in a press conference following his side’s defeat, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played down the pair’s respective fitness concerns.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully they won’t be too bad and maybe we can have them training during the week”.

However, the days since have seen the news on both United stars prove far from encouraging.

First, widespread reports spread earlier today that Shaw is expected to spend up to 5 weeks on the sidelines.

And an update on Martial has since also been forthcoming. As per Jamie Jackson, Manchester football correspondent for the Guardian, Martial looks set to miss United’s meeting with Southampton this weekend.
