Mauricio pochettino must start big game player Christian Eriksen despite uncertainty over Tottenham future says Clive Allen

Former Tottenham star Clive Allen has urged Mauricio Pochettino to start Christian Eriksen more ahead of Sunday’s north London derby clash at Arsenal.

Eriksen, 27, has only started one of Spurs’ three Premier League matches this season amid suggestions that he’s deliberately not signed a new contract in order to help him leave the club.

The Denmark international, who has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, is entering the final year of his contract and will thus be a free agent next summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

The game where Eriksen did start this season saw Spurs claim a creditable draw at reigning Premier League champions Manchester City .

Meanwhile, he arguably changed the course of their opening game which saw Spurs come from behind to beat Aston Villa , however, Eriksen could not do anything about their defeat at home to Newcastle last weekend.

It’s been a mixed start to the 2019/20 campaign for Spurs but the loss to the Magpies has placed an added importance on their game at their local rivals.

And Allen believes Pochettino and the club must set aside any differences they may have with Eriksen and use him more, even if he’s deliberately seeing out the final year of his contract.

Allen told talkSPORT 2: “For me, he’s [Eriksen] a big game player and he’s one who can create those chances for Harry Kane. Eriksen links the game up, particularly with Dele Alli being absent.

“You know exactly what Eriksen’s doing, he’s running his contract down.

“There will have been discussions with his representatives to try and sort it out whether that’s a new contract or extending that or they’ve got to a point where they realise they can’t secure that.

“But you’ve still got to use him, you’ve got him for a year and he’s got to play.

Jamie O’Hara thinks Mauricio Pochettino will leave Spurs this season.

“I always feel with a player who is running his contract down there comes a point where he knows he’s got to produce his best form for possible suitors wherever he’s going.

“It’s sometimes a difficult one with players in the last years of their contracts but you can still get the best out of them and that’s what Spurs have to do”.

Spurs have not performed as well as they are capable of so far this season and Allen is worried that star striker Kane not getting the service he needs is the main reason behind this.

And Allen believes the return of Alli, who’s currently nursing a hamstring injury, will help Kane get into goalscoring positions more often.

Allen added: “The only thing that worries me is that he’s [Kane] not being given a lot of chances.

“For me, he’s missing Dele Alli. There’s a combination and an understanding with Dele Alli and I think when they’re not together Harry suffers because of that.

“I think he’s in great shape. I saw him at the start of the season and he looks in fantastic condition. There’s no doubt that he’ll score goals if you give him chances.

“The frustrating thing for him at the moment is that he’s having to come deep and come out of goalscoring positions because chances haven’t been created.

“If you give Harry Kane three or four chances in a game, he’ll score one or two goals.”
